"The paintings leave you contemplating the vastness of the horizon and what it is we have created."

The views you see in David Questa’s work capture the strong memories and understanding he has for towns and cities he has lived in and visited.

Much time is spent sketching, experimenting, painting and repainting to create an image that is a record of the life of a place and how it has grown, how it has evolved. Sometimes we are looking down onto roofs that run like streams cutting through man made valleys of stone. In other works we see the mastery of planning, giant grids containing millions of lights. The strong sense of line and shape is like scaffolding from which paint hangs creating life, reflecting all those that live and work there.

Cities are always places of challenge, this is reflected in the painting styles you can see in Cityscapes. Questa’s loose expressive style, thick textured paint and dramatic brush marks compete against the structure and order of the built environment. Sometimes choosing to work in layers of paint so thin you can see through the buildings emphasising the young and fragile quality of glass and steel constructions, where as the old towns are thick and rich in paint. The fixed viewpoint gives you an opportunity to explore the work of so many that have been involved in construction of the landscapes. The paintings leave you contemplating the vastness of the horizon and what it is we have created.
